Perfectionism in Homeschooling: The Truth
/Last week, a vibrant discussion unfolded in our off social group about the realities of perfectionism and persistence in homeschooling. It quickly became evident that many of us grapple with similar struggles. From the endless interruptions to feeling scattered, the overarching sentiment was clear: we often fall short of the idyllic (perfection) vision we had when we embarked on the journey of home education.
I'm compelled to share my thoughts from that conversation here because, honestly, it's something that bears repeating.
To every homeschooling parent out there, I want you to know: you're not alone in this whirlwind. The chaos? It's real. As a homeschool mom of four (going on year 13), I've navigated through the tumultuous waves of constant interruptions and the overwhelming sense that I'm not doing enough. It's a feeling echoed by every homeschooling parent I've spoken to.
Here's the truth – homeschooling is tough. It's a relentless tide of challenges with no perfect solution. Sure, we can strategize, set boundaries, and guide our children, but the journey will always be demanding. Accepting this can be strangely liberating. Accepting the innately challenging nature of doing something so counter-cultural can help us shed the guilt and recognize that the serene, picture-perfect moments often portrayed on social media are far from the complete story.
But let's be clear: acknowledging the difficulty doesn't mean giving up on striving for better. It means we continue to pour our hearts into this path, working diligently as though for the Lord, all while understanding that chaos is part of the package. Our homes might often feel like a chaotic minefield, but this is the essence of homeschooling – a dance of progress and setbacks, a repetition of lessons and corrections.
Opting for traditional schooling might offer a quieter home, but it doesn't necessarily quiet the soul. Even through the most raucous, challenging days, we find solace in knowing we're following our calling – to educate our children diligently in every aspect of life. There's a unique exhaustion that comes from straying away from this calling, a soul-deep weariness that's hard to shake off.
In sharing this message, I hope to strike a balance between relentlessly seeking improvement and not growing weary in doing good. Layering perfectionism on top of this already fraught tension can do nothing but lead to overwhelm. Yet, if we start each day with a solid plan, a heart full of good character, and an understanding that we can't control every aspect, we find a sense of freedom in the beautiful chaos of our homeschooling life.
So, to all homeschooling parents riding this rollercoaster – you're doing an incredible job. Embrace the chaos, for it's in this beautiful mess that real learning and living thrive.
